Posing as a tourist, Emily makes her way to China with the job of protecting a CIA treasure.

Mrs Pollifax on the China Station (Audible Audio Edition) Dorothy Gilman Barbara Rosenblat Recorded Books Books

The Mrs. Pollifax series was a favorite of my Grandma, and I read this out of nostalgia. I could see why she liked the series - an inventive, wise and courageous old lady as the main character. I liked Mrs. Pollifax' observation. "There are no happy endings, Jenny, there are only happy people."

A critic described this book as a page-turner, but I disagree, especially about the beginning of the book. There was a little too much emphasis on scenic descriptions - the color brown was mentioned too often and sometimes the book sounded like a travel brochure. But the subject of culture shock and communication obstacles was handled well. The trip put a lot of pressure on the little group of travellers, and, as one character put it: "Pressure can go either way... it creates diamonds, it also creates explosions." All in all a fun read.

Mrs Pollifax on the China Station (Audible Audio Edition) Dorothy Gilman Barbara Rosenblat Recorded Books Books Reviews

I've read them all and regret deeply that there will be no more. In China Mrs P is sent off to manage part one of a complex plot; complications of course ensue. What is special about this narrative is the utterly believable cast of tourists - especially Malcolm and Iris. Great fun.
This time Emily Pollifax tours China to help arrange the escape of a man detained in a labor camp, Sculdugery and evasion endues accompanied by dsnger and death, but a happy ending crowns all. Dorothy Gilman delights again!
Dorothy Gilman has been one of my favorite authors for years! All locations described in her books have been thoroughly researched for authenticity. The heroine is a seventy-something lady who accidently became a "spy". She had been bored with life and suddenly found a new, exciting life. Start with the first book to know how and why her life changed; all following books are independent adventures. Cozy, easy read and fun.
Dorothy Gilman DOB 1923 New Brunswick NJ was 43 years of age in 1966 when Unexpected Mrs Pollifax about a conventional grandmotherly garden club member was published, the first of 14 Mrs Pollifax assignments with the CIA. Gilman's middle aged notion of a 60 year old woman who feels she has outlived her usefulness as silly was comedically appealing to a Baby Boomer 1966 crowd.

By 1977 when Mrs Pollifax on Safari was published, Gilman was 54yo, but Mrs Pollifax had only aged 4 years since first meeting Farrell in Albania in Unexpected Mrs Pollifax.

Mrs Pollifax on the China Station 1983 #6 explores the vast expanse of the Taklamakan dessert west of Xian, crossing the Himalayas beyond Tibet. China had only recently opened to the US and maintained the architectural and social rigidity of Russian Communism, square buildings, furniture placement, uniforms. If you threw away a ballpoint pen in the trash, it would follow you to the next hotel and be returned with deep apologies. Chinese could not travel within their own country without visas. One was assigned a job, even if that was not what one was trained in, or was in a city distant from one's spouse and children.

By 1985 Mrs Pollifax and the Hong Kong Buddha #7 had only progressed a few months, where Gilman's personal outlook had matured dramatically; fewer than 5 years in Mrs Pollifax' life elapsed since the Unexpected Mrs Pollifax #1.

A first reading of the series is laughable, gentle CIA-lite. A rereading as I am doing now highlights entirely different aspects of the write particularly the contemplations of an individual reassessing a past which cannot be changed and gathering resources to face acceptance of continual loss, of personal physical capacities, family, friends with age. The Mrs Pollifax series is autobiographical for Gilman, who began growing her own vegetables and medicinal herbs, and reflecting on a lifetime of accumulated wisdom for Mrs Pollifax Unveiled in 2000. Gilman died 2012 age 88 of Alzheimer's. Two movies were made of Mrs Pollifax 1971 Pollifax-Spy with Rosalind Russell, 1999 Unexpected Mrs Pollifax with Angela Lansbury who went on the popular Murder, She Wrote series.

Fifty-one years separates 1966 from 2017. My reader's perspective is more attentive to musings on life purpose and meaning. I notice Gilman's sensitive reflections of Mrs Pollifax on the end of life, her gratitude for a "good run" as she prioritizes "he has his hells to face, as I have mine" no longer worrying about others' challenges when she has to focus on her own survival.

The China Station is an inflection point among the novels, from comedic to more self reflective though Mrs Pollifax ages less than 5 years. Perhaps as Gilman crossed the 70yo boundary she began to contemplate the desperately important implications of compassion and character in the face of human suffering, politics, extremism and hopelessness among the displaced, unemployed and global conflict. Gilman began growing medicinal herbs and writing of them.

The editor devilishly uses scansion to hide clues among paragraphs, distracting attention from facts which may be read in more than one manner similar to The Westing Game (Puffin Modern Classics) Newberry Medal winner by Ellen Raskin.

Mrs Pollifax series is best read in order, with narratives growing in intensity in shared wisdom with author age.

Highly thought provoking series for me as Mrs Pollifax muses to herself, and sometimes mentors younger travel companions. 5*
The Mrs. Pollifax series by Dorothy Gilman are great books. You have them all on audio which I don't care for. I prefer to read the books myself. There are 6 more Mrs. Pollifax books. The ones you already have on E-reader format aren't all available in the order in which they were written. When I read a series I like to read them in the order they were written, because each one builds and adds to the previous book. Please make the other 6 Mrs. Pollifax books available in the E-reader format.
This was the second Mrs. Pollifax novel I've read and I was not disappointed. If you're at all a fan of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple - I think you'll really enjoy Mrs. Pollifax. If you've never read Mrs. Pollifax - begin with the first in the series so that you understand how she came to be working for the US Goverment - that book is The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax. This book, is charming overall. The author does an excellent job hiding the identity of Mrs. Pollifax' accomplice - and enemy - until the time is right for us to know. The suspense is very good. I love the small unfolding romances as well. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that Mrs. Pollifax is able to resolve something tricky (I won't tell you which thing and ruin it for you - don't worry) by almost luck at one point - I would have prefered her to use her brains and resourcefulness more in some instances. But - it is a minor quibble - she's so charming - I'm eager to read more of the series! Hope you enjoy it too. )
This time out, the story divides between Mrs. Pollifax and her co-spy, with several twists to keep us on our toes. What I especially like about the character is her ability to see the good in her fellows, and the calm demeanor that hides the anxiety under the surface.

Also, in this book, Emily finds that her life is no longer a throwaway, as she has fallen in love and wants to part of that world again.
